Copilot inherits every permission your users already have — and in most Microsoft 365 tenants, those permissions are far more permissive than anyone realizes. 1. Permissions Cleanup & Sensitivity Labels

Run a discovery scan against every SharePoint site, Teams channel, and OneDrive account in your tenant. Identify files shared with "Everyone," "anyone with the link," or external guests. Apply Microsoft Purview sensitivity labels (Confidential, Highly Confidential, Internal Only) to documents based on content and context. Copilot respects these labels — if it's configured correctly.

2. Data Loss Prevention (DLP) Policies

Configure DLP policies that block Copilot from generating responses based on documents containing protected data — Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, PHI, or content tagged with sensitivity labels above a threshold you define. Microsoft provides templates for HIPAA, PCI-DSS, and similar frameworks; we tune them for each client's specific compliance requirements.

3. Conditional Access & MFA Hardening

Copilot uses the user's identity to determine what data it can access. If that identity is compromised, the attacker has an AI-powered assistant for searching your environment. Strong conditional access policies and phishing-resistant MFA are non-negotiable before Copilot is enabled.

4. Audit Logging & Behavior Monitoring

Every Copilot interaction is logged in the Microsoft 365 audit log — if you've turned that on. Most tenants haven't. Enable Purview audit logging, retain logs for at least 90 days, and feed them into a SIEM where unusual patterns can be detected. Update your acceptable use policy to address AI-generated content.
